State Budget Gets Greensborough College Rebuild Underway

State Member for Bundoora, Colin Brooks, has today hailed the 2015-16 State Budget as a victory for the students and community of Greensborough College, with the Treasurer announcing $1 million for planning and early works to begin rebuilding the school.

“Today’s budget shows that the Andrews Labor Government is delivering on its election commitments” Mr Brooks said.

“Four years ago, the community of Greensborough College were devastated to hear that the previous government had canned Labor’s plans to rebuild the school. Despite a hard fought campaign by the local community, and the pressing need the Liberals still refused to commit funds to a rebuild.

“That’s why I was so excited to announce last year that if Labor was elected, it would commit $10 million towards rebuilding Greensborough College” he said.

Mr Brooks said that the Treasurer had made it clear that the remaining $9 million would be funded after the planning work had been completed.

“Greensborough College is a great local school, with a vibrant community of staff, children and parents” Mr Brooks said.

“In recent times the school’s enrolments have experienced a dramatic increase, with many students now coming from growth areas of Doreen, Mernda and South Morang, which has placed increased strain on the already ageing infrastructure of the school” he said.

The Labor Government’s 2015-16 Victorian Budget is the biggest education budget in history, investing $3.3 billion across schools and TAFEs. Of this, $325 million has been allocated to rebuild, renovate or refurbish 67 rundown or overcrowded schools across the state.
